What Types of Renewable Energy Are Used in Australia

Energy that you can get from natural resources that can be constantly replenished, is most often referred to as renewable energy and there are a variety of different types being used in Australia. Different energy technologies use different renewable resources.

Bioenergy – This is a type of renewable energy used in Australia that comes from biomass and is used to create electricty as well as heat. It is also used in liquid form for fuel. This is any kind of biomass that is organic matter from either a plant or animal origin.

This type of renewable energy in Australia is most often used for bagasse, and this remains after the sugar has been taken from the sugarcane. Landfill gas, wood waste, energy crops, municipal waste and agricultural products.

Geothermal – This is the kind of energy that is stored as heat that is found in the earth and in Australia, this kind of renweable energy is very abundant. The energy is brought to the surface of the earth by taking hot water that is ciculating in the sub surface rocks or by pumping in cold water onto the hot rocks and then returning this heated water to the surface. This is most often done to run steam turbines that make electricity.

Hydropower – This is the kind of energy that uses the force of moving water to help generate the power needed. The power is created when the water that is moving is channeled through big water turbines. The pressure of the water moves the baldes in the turbines and this in then will convert into electrical energy.

Ocean Energy – This is the term used for all energy that is created from the ocean. There are three classifications of the different energy created by the ocean. One is wave energy and this is created by converting energy from the waves on the ocean. Tidal energy is created from the movement of the tides and finally there is ocean thermal energy and this is created by converting the difference in temperature between the top of the water and deeper water.

Solar – This is of course the energy that is created from the sunlight or the heat of the sun. This type of energy can be used for electricity, to heat air, water or fluids and there are two main types. Solar thermal which converts the sunlight into thermal energy for heating or to drive refrigeration cycles to cool. Then ther eis solar photovoltaic which converts the sunlight directly to electricity. This is done by using photovoltaic cells. These are installed on rooftops as well as integrated into buildings and vehicles or they can be huge and can power megawatt power plants.

Wind – This is energy that is created by converting the currents of the wind into various forms of energy using wind turbines. The wind is created by the rotation of the earth, the heat of the sun, the cooling effect of the oceans and the polar ice caps as well as the temperature differences between land and sea, mountains and other obstacles there might be. The turbines will convert the winds force into what is called a torque and then this can be used to help propel an electric generator to make electricity. Wind energy happens to be the fastest growing type of renewable energy all over the world.
